About GenomSys

The open standard for the genome

GenomSys is a Swiss genomic software company founded with the goal of transforming the way genomic data is stored, processed, shared and used in clinical practice and research. The company operates in the computational genomics and precision medicine segment, developing technologies based on the international standard ISO/IEC 23092 MPEG-G, the first and only ISO standard dedicated to the representation of genomic data.

History

GenomSys was founded in 2016 at EPFL by a group of computer engineers and bioinformaticians with a clear vision: to make genomic data interoperable, secure and easy to use, overcoming the limitations of traditional FASTQ, BAM and VCF formats.

From its inception, the company chose a strategy different from that of most genomics companies. Rather than developing analysis tools exclusively, it invested in building the technological infrastructure intended to become the foundation of future digital genomics.

The most significant outcome of this journey was the company's decisive contribution to the development of the international standard ISO/IEC 23092 MPEG-G, published in 2020 and now recognized as the leading open standard for genomic data management. GenomSys was one of the industrial protagonists in defining the standard and continues to develop its software implementations.

In 2024 the company embarked on a major industrial reorganization, establishing GenomSys S.r.l. in Italy and setting up its MPEG-G Competence Center in Milan, dedicated to software development, bioinformatics and international technical support. At the same time, the management team, the software platform and the commercial strategy were all renewed, with the aim of returning the company to a growth phase focused on the industrial adoption of the MPEG-G standard. The Italian subsidiary is today the center of gravity for design, software production and the commercialization of solutions at both the national and international level.

The Genomics Market

The genomics sector is undergoing a phase of structural transformation.

Several factors are accelerating demand:

  • the spread of personalized medicine
  • declining sequencing costs
  • national genomic screening programs
  • the use of artificial intelligence in medicine
  • growth in oncological genomics
  • the development of pharmacogenomics
  • the expansion of biobanks

All of these phenomena generate enormous volumes of data. Efficient genomic data management is becoming as strategically important as data generation itself. It is precisely at this stage of the value chain that GenomSys operates.

GenomSys's business activity is entirely focused on genomics software.

The company develops a modular platform that enables diagnostic laboratories, hospitals, research centers and biotech companies to manage large volumes of genomic data more efficiently than with traditional technologies.

The Value Proposition

GenomSys's competitive advantage lies not only in software development but, above all, in possessing unique expertise across the entire MPEG-G ecosystem. The standard introduces features not available in traditional genomic formats:

  • advanced lossless compression
  • selective data access
  • genomic data streaming
  • full interoperability
  • metadata integration
  • granular access control
  • built-in encryption

These capabilities are built for the increasingly large genomic datasets set to grow further with the spread of next-generation sequencing (NGS).

Outlook

The company's industrial outlook is closely tied to the progressive adoption of the MPEG-G standard.

In the medium term, the market could evolve from a model based on proprietary formats toward a standardized infrastructure.

In this scenario, GenomSys occupies a particularly attractive position, since it:

  • contributed to defining the standard
  • holds the leading industrial implementation
  • possesses highly specialized expertise that is difficult to replicate
  • offers a comprehensive platform covering compression, storage, processing and analysis

The company is also expanding its international presence through distribution agreements and industrial partnerships, as well as through participation in major international scientific events dedicated to genomics.

Strategic Vision

The vision stated by management is to build the reference digital infrastructure for the genomics of the future.

The ambition is to do for genomic data what the PDF format has represented for electronic documents: a universal, interoperable standard, independent of individual software vendors.

In this light, GenomSys positions itself not merely as an application developer, but as the technological enabler of the entire precision medicine ecosystem, providing a platform on which hospitals, laboratories, diagnostic companies and developers can build new genomic applications.

Overall Assessment

Chief Executive Officer, GenomSys

From an industrial standpoint, GenomSys holds a distinctive position: rather than competing primarily in the biological interpretation of genomic data, it commands the infrastructural layer of the value chain, developing technologies for the standardized, efficient and secure management of genomic information.

The company's vision is based on the growing adoption of MPEG-G in the coming years. As a result, the company stands to benefit from a competitive advantage derived from the experience gained in developing the standard, from the availability of an already operational proprietary platform, and from its ability to offer interoperable solutions for research, diagnostics and precision medicine.
